At Portico Charlottesville, we call members, "Investors". As Christians, we are members of and investors in God’s household (Eph. 2:19) called to function, participate, and minister in a particular place within the body of Christ. A healthy body requires that each member do its part well. A healthy church requires the same: people that are sacrificially committed and well-equipped to do the works of service that God has prepared in advance for us to do (Eph. 2:10; 4:12). Portico Church holds its Investors in high regard. Portico Investors function as the primary missionaries of the Gospel to our culture. God, in His sovereignty, placed us in this city, among these people, and in this century for a specific purpose (Acts 17:26-27).
The global church has a blemished track record of allowing its members to become observers while an exhausted, burnt-out pastor and staff do all the work in the church and in the community around it. Portico Church is committed to creating a model that reflects God’s heart for his children - an organic composition of hearts and hands living out the Gospel with much more than measly lip service. Investorship is not a status symbol or social club. An Investor who acknowledges they are a part of the body of Christ and enters into a covenant with their local church is called to a higher degree of responsibility. Conversely, the elders and deacons are covenanted to assist their Investors first and foremost; to provide counsel, service, and aid; as well as to pray, teach, and guide as necessary.
To transition from a guest to an Investor at Portico Church, we ask that you attend these foundational Gospel classes, where we will look at an overview of Christian essentials and how we live in light of these doctrines. This is more than a survey of beliefs. Content includes an overview of the Gospel, the Church, culture, and how these practically play out in our lives, both individually and corporately.
We believe that God calls us to invest in the local church by utilizing our time, talent, and treasure – living the life of mission and ministry for which we were created. Eph. 2:10. Jesus clearly illustrates His view of investment in Matt. 25:14 with the parable of the talents. Jesus relates the Kingdom of Heaven to the picture of a master, who, going on a journey, entrusts his wealth to his servants. In the end, those servants who invested the master’s talents received a great reward, while the one who buried his talent was sent away from the master’s house. We at Portico strive to be servants of God, who, knowing our Master, invest the talents He has given us, storing up for ourselves treasure in Heaven (Matt. 6:19-20), for the advancement of His Kingdom and for our great reward when the Master returns to settle accounts.
